Wildlife comes to Stretton

During the first part of this term we found some snake eggs in our compost heap. Robin put these under a black dustbin lid to draw heat from the autumn sun and they eventually hatched into young grass snakes. 6 eggs were found, 5 of which hatched. We managed to capture the snakes to enable Robin to take them to school to show each class to sample the wildlife of the region.
The children were carefully supervised and were able to handle the snakes if they wished. Later that day they were released back into the wild habitat.

In October, we found a mother and baby hedgehog in the garden during the daytime, which is unusual and potentially dangerous for the mammal. These were rescued and were kept warm in a cardboard box. Later they were taken to Stretton School and again, each class were shown the hedgehogs. The mother was rather timid and remained in a ball, but the baby was more inquisitive and came readily came out. Some children were given the opportunity to hold the animals. Later that evening they were released into the wild.
